Have your Cake n Eat it too.... Cake Smash Photography

Choosing a cake for your babies Cake Smash Session can seem over whelming.

How do i bake it? where do i get the moulds? what if it drops and looses its shape before the photo shoot? which type of icing should i use.

Here are some tips I have acquired along the way thoughout my Cake Smashing days

1. Keep it Simple

Your Cake doesnt have to be a professionally made 3 tier royal iced cake...after all its going to be smashed into an ablivion. Choose one main colour and accesorise with sprinkles, ribbons, candles ect you can even add candy, marshmallows or edible figures to add effect

2. Vanilla Sponge

I have found plain or Vanilla Sponge Cakes to be the most popular with tiny tots, they are light in texture so easy to break, sweet in taste to get the bubbas munching and allow you to add colour to the sponge if desired

3. Use Butter Frosting

Whilst it is tempting to go all out and use thicker more sustanable icings that will last, they tend to hold their shape a little too much which prevents the baby to really smash up the cake. Using a thick whipped butter icing or betty crocker iced cream will give a good solid coverage and will still be soft enough for the baby to enjoy/smash

3. Whip it

Whipping your butter frosting or Cream in a food processor gives a nice thick yummy texture, you can get a spatula and easily cover a sponge in seconds, so i recommend you wait last minute to add you icing to save any dropping in shape

4. Theme it

Choosing a theme in the begining can help come up with your cake style, If your doing a princess theme, you may choose to frill your icing with a tiara accescory on top or if you were going with more of an antique theme you could choose a rose bud icing swirl. Your cake can really add to the theme / vibe you are going for in the images so brainstorm before you bake !

5. Smash it and Have Fun

The premise of a cake smash is for your baby or child to let loose and have fun on their special day, so dont "stress" about the cake being perfect. Do your best and have fun making it...and if baking isnt your thing outsource to your local bakery or purchase the sponge pre made, it doesnt have to cost the world
